BORA BORA French Polynesia

 DAY 32/138   1.20.2024    Sunrise  5:49 AM  Sunset 6:47 PM

Bora Bora (Vaitape), French polynesia.  considered the world's most beautiful island, the Society Island of Bora Bora is only 15 square miles.  This stunning land is made up of a barrier reef of islets, each one connected to the next depending on the tides.  Surrounded by a deep lagoon that glows countless shades of turquoise and emerald, its palm-lined shores and forested slopes rise up dramatically to the pillar-like peak of Mt. Otemanu at 2,379 feet.

As we sailed closer to the harbor we went past several resorts that had huts built over the gorgeous water.  We learned later that some of these huts rent for $300 to $500 per night.

Out of the mist this is what we saw upon our arrival in the harbor.

The port area had some beautiful murals that caught my eye.

Our tour today started out in an old school bus repurposed as a tour bus.  Here is a photo of the bus and we are the two passengers on the right side in the rear.
As we drove through the small port area we went past this lovely yellow church.

We made a brief stop at a roadside business that had samples of fresh fruit, a bathroom for those who needed it,  and a display of colorful textiles that were for sale.

It began raining just before we arrived at the roadside stop.  The negative aspect of this was that we had to stand out in the rain.  But the positive aspect was that the rain enhanced the beauty of the local flora.

As we proceeded up the road the rain became stronger and we saw rain pouring down the hillside.      The rainfall on Bora Bora is reported to be 100 inches annually and of course we were visiting during the rainy season.

Here is a lovely scene that we passed by.  Bora Bora truly is a paradise island.

After circling the entire island on a road built by the U.S. military during World War Two we arrived back in the main town.  John had earlier spotted the fire station so we wandered over there for a photo session.

We were happy with our tour and felt like we got a good overview of Bora Bora.  A dip in the water would have been welcome and it appeared that the island has lovely sand upon which to walk.   We left promptly at 6PM on our way to Moorea for tomorrow's excursion.
