FOURTH SEA DAY ON OUR WAY TO HAWAII

Another wonderful Sea Day with time at the gym, time walking the stairs, meals, and talks.

We listened to a Guest Lecture with Dr. David Burgess: "The Discovery and Culture of Hawaii". Discovering the background and history of America's 50th State.

John met with his amateur radio group and was excited that eight passengers were in attendance.

I attended another Photography workshop with Mr. James Fraser: "Photograph wildlife with Confidence in your Camera". Mr. Fraser is a a very pleasant self-deprecating speaker who shares a lot of ideas and secrets about getting the best photos regardless of whether you're using a smart phone or a camera. The room he is using is always packed for his talks. RE: cameras, I prefer using my Sony RX10 because it has a lot of settings that I use and appreciate. And most important of all to me is that I can use the View Finder. When the weather is sunny, I find it difficult to use a smart phone because the screen is hard to see in direct sunlight.

After lunch I attended the Craft group and finished another Sashiko square.

I believe this is the third square I've finished and will use them in a wall hanging. When I was in Japan several years ago with an Overseas Adventure Tour I bought several of these squares at the Takashimaya Department Store.

I had the pleasure of sitting next to one of the ship's speakers, Dr. Linda Bradley, who has lived in Hawaii and she shared information about a fabric shop in Honolulu and it's just about 2 miles from where the ship will be docked. Maybe I'll get a chance to stop in.

In the afternoon  I attended a talk with Viking Resident Historian  Wing Commander (Ret) William Simpson: "Toyko Rose; Patriot or Traitor?"  We discussed whether Iva Toguri d'Aquino was justly convicted of treason for her WWII radio broadcasts.   She served time in prison but was ultimately pardoned by President Gerald Ford in 1977. 

I joined my friends Joel and Anona Frensdorf in The Restaurant for dinner.  ordered mostly from the Vegetarian menu and actually had a Vegetable Green Curry that was spicy.  Yum.  

Later in the evening I went to the Star Theater for a perforance by Hayden Smith who featured songs by Kenny G., Michael Buble, Josh Groban and Earth, Wind & Fire.  He and his wife Alexa Jayne have been two of the entertainers on board since L.A.  They have been doing the Cruise ship circuit for several years. Besides being a vocalist he plays the guitar and saxaphone.  He is originally from Australia.

 This world map of the 2023-24 Viking World Cruise was enticing enough to pay down a deposit and start making plans for 138 days on a cruise ship with 900+ other passengers.  The big day for the start of the cruise is December 20, 2023 in Ft. Lauderdale.  We will fly there from Phoenix and spend two days enjoying the gorgeous Atlantic Ocean  beaches of Ft. Lauderdale before boarding the ship.

WHAT A CRAZY RIDE THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS HAVE BEEN

We're finally on the Viking Sky and  sailing south has begun.  No photos tonight but there will be more later.  The last several days have been crazy.  Saturday the 16th we rented a car, Sunday we did the final check on the house and made sure everything was locked up, and the last thing that John always does is turn off the water to the house.  We drove to Phoenix, turned in the car, and stayed overnight at the Drury Hotel and then the next day their shuttle took us to the airport  where we boarded the plane to start our journey.  Fortunately our luggage arrived in Ft. Lauderdale and we checked into the Westin Hotel, our home for two nights. We explored Ft. ROTORUA SECOND DAY

DAY 44/138    FEBRUARY 2, 2024  Sunrise 6:29AM   Sunset: 8:27 PM Rotorua (Tauranga), New Zealand   One of Tauranga's first European visitors was Captain James Cook, who in November 1769, sailed past Mauao.  James Cook's explorations paved the way for european settlement.  Traders in flax were active in the Bay of Plenty during the 1830's; some were transient, others married local women and settled permanently.  The first permanent trader was James Farrow, who travelled to Trauranga in 1829, obtaining flax fibre for Australian merchants in exchange for muskets and gunpowder.  Farrow acquired a land area of 0.5 acres in 1838 at Otumoetai Pa from the chiefs tupaea, Tangimoana and Te Omanu, this is the earliest authenticated land purchase in the Bay of Plenty.  OUR EXCURSION TODAY WAS SCENIC BAY OF PLENTY Rolling Farmland and Kiwifruit Orchards -- Meet your guide and board y...
